A proposal to increase the sales tax could soon go before Maryville residents.
The Maryville City Council approved a measure on first reading Thursday night to increase the sales tax rate half a percent from 9.25 to 9.75. That's the maximum allowed in the state.
City leaders estimate that will bring in an extra $2.5 million each year. Half the money would go to the school system, the other half would go in the city's general fund.
The council will consider the proposal on a second reading next month. If they approve it, the proposal will go to voters in a referendum on the November ballot.
