A driver was struck by a tractor-trailer and died after a crash along 347 eastbound involving six vehicles in Roane County before 6:00 a.m. on Monday.
According to Trooper Eric Miller with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, six vehicles in total crashed into each other in what he described as a "chain reaction crash." The first car driven by 36-year-old Arthur J. Rivers hydroplaned and ran off the right side of the road. The front end of the car was in traffic.
Another car driven by 35-year-old Scott Bilbrey hit Rivers' car on the left side. A third car driven by 56-year-old Charlie Langley swerved to avoid the first two vehicles and hit the Rivers' vehicle on the left side.
A fourth car driven by 43-year-old Robert Calabrese Jr hit the car driven by Langley in the rear. A fifth car driven by 76-year-old Irene Atkins of Crossville swerved to avoid the other cars and hit Rivers' vehicle one on the left side. Atkins' car went against a concrete wall and she got out of the vehicle.
A sixth car driven by 43-year-old Kirk Patrick Romero swerved to avoid the collision and struck Atkins' car in the rear as well as hit Atkins killing her.
No charges have been filed at this time and no other injuries were reported.
