A Knoxville man is charged with DUI, Resisting Arrest, and Assault, after fighting with a KPD officer.
According to KPD, Officer Haley Starr was at the scene of a car accident on Oldham when she saw the driver of another vehicle back into a utility pole.
Officer Starr approached the driver, Fred Robert Smith, III, 39,
and noticed he was intoxicated. She attempted to arrest him and he started fighting her. During the struggle, KPD says Smith grabbed the officer's arm and gun belt, causing them both to fall to the ground.
Officer Starr had called for help, and she and the other responding officers detained Smith. Both of them were transported to Tennova Hospital with non-life threatening injuries sustained in the fall and scuffle.
A Knoxville Police officer was transported to the hospital to be checked out after a suspected drunk driver began fighting with her.
A KPD spokesperson says the officer had pulled the driver over around noon Friday on Oldham at Central. The driver became combative, and the officer called for help. When the officers arrived, they were able to take the man into custody.
The officer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. There is no word on her condition.
