(WBIR - Union County) Several people, old-fashioned and modern, joined in Sharps Chapel for a Confederate grave marker dedication on Saturday.

Shots rang in the open country air at New Mossy Springs Cemetery during the dedication for 2nd Sergeant Mathew McDaniel "Dan" Patton of the 50th Virginia Infantry.

The Sons of Confederate Veteran and the Union County Cemeteries Association planned the dedication ceremony after discovering Patton's gravesite.

Camp 87 Commander Scott D. Hall says dedicating grave markers reminds people of the sacrifice and hardships those soldiers experienced.

Many Confederate graves remain unmarked, but family members and historians are able to find gravesites through research and old records.
