The City of Knoxville, Knox County Solid Waste and other organizations hosted a "Plug Into Your Community" e-cycling event this weekend.

People dropped off computers, small appliances and other basic electronics for free at Chilhowee Park.

Officials said about 60 tons of electronic devices avoided the trash and went to recycling that day.

Solid Waste Project Manager John Homa said taking the time to recycle electronics, instead of throwing them away is better for everyone.

"A lot of those materials do have a lot of hazardous material in them.  Lead in the monitors and the PCs, cadmium, barium, those kinds of thing, we just don't want those in the landfill," said Homa.

If you missed the weekend event, you can still recycle electronics at three locations in Knox County.
