Several reports earlier in the week indicated a response from the U.S. on Syria could happen as early as Thursday.

While Tennessee Senator Alexander and others support U.S. action, others say President Obama has yet to make a case for action. That's despite the administration's conclusion that the Syrian government did carry out a large-scale chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus last week.

Top administration officials are expected to brief House and Senate leaders and national security committees Thursday evening.
