The Tennessee Valley Authority officially celebrated the completion of its natural plant in Hawkins County on Thursday. Local, state and federal officials dedicated the John Sevier Plant in Rogersville.
The plant began commercial operation in late April, a month ahead of schedule.
John Sevier is TVA's fifth combined cycle natural gas plant. It uses excess heat as an energy source, which makes the whole operation more efficient.
TVA says natural gas power production is important for the future.
"As we stepped back and looked at the future of our portfolio and evaluated what type of generation resources best fit the needs of the TVA region to ensure that we have a reliable supply, natural gas is something we wanted to broaden," said Bob Dalrymple.
TVA says natural gas is cheaper right now and better for the environment.
The new plant produces the same amount of energy as the former coal plant across the street, but with fewer emissions.
