A Knoxville law firm has filed what could be the first lawsuit in Tennessee stemming from the meningitis outbreak.
Joan Peay, of Nashville, is suing New England Compounding Pharmacy for $5 million. That's the company that produced the drug used to treat thousands of people for back pain and has been linked to fungal meningitis.
Gilreath and Associates of Knoxville says Joan Peay received the drug for chronic back pain back in September, and that led to severe symptoms.
Nationwide, cases of meningitis have risen to 271 with 21 deaths.
