The families of Chris Newsom and Channon Christian said they approved a jury's verdict against former Judge Richard Baumgartner Friday.
The disgraced judge was found guilty on five out of six counts of misprision of a felony. Baumgartner was convicted of lying to several people, including state officials, to cover up a drug trafficking conspiracy involving Deena Castleman. She was at one time a member of the drug court that Baumgartner founded.
"It's not a surprise, I assumed he would be found guilty," said Mary Newsom.
The Powell mother sat in Judge Baumgartner's court for months as defendants in the killings of her child were convicted one by one. Since then, another judge ordered new trials amid the scandal surrounding Baumgartner.
"I think if he did it over he would have conducted himself differently, but a judge is human also," Mary's husband, Hugh, said.
The family said despite the roller coaster of events over the last five years, the family still feels some sympathy for Baumgartner.
"My heart goes out to him, but he was the judge and should've known what he did," Mary said.
10News also spoke with the family of Channon Christian. Mother Deena said while she approved of this jury's decision, she wondered about Baumgartner's pension.
We've learned the state has stopped sending him payments as of Friday.
Meanwhile, the Newsoms said they're still not satisfied with the justice system as a whole, despite Friday's decision.
"We were very well educated in the justice system," Hugh said, "and it's broke. It's not bent, it's broke."
