Holidays can be a difficult and lonely time for thousands of military men and women fighting for our nation overseas.
To help out troops serving abroad, local marine mom Lisa Nichols spent this weekend stuffing hundreds of stockings for troops overseas.
"I think they miss being at home and all the family gatherings and the food and the presents," said Nichols. "I think it's hard being away from home."
Nichols started this endeavor, 'Stockings from US' (formerly known as 'Stockings for Marines'), two years ago after her son was deployed. During that year, she sent 150 stocking to his unit. This year Nichols is planning to send 700 stockings with the help of the Knoxville Downtown Sertoma Club.
10News featured Nichols and her "Stocking from US" project in a recent Service & Sacrifice segment, which aired earlier this month.
Each stocking will be filled with snacks, hygiene products and other items.
The deadline for donations is November 24. Shipments will begin November 1.
A $25 donation will fill and ship a stocking. All donations are welcome and are tax deductible.
