Family, friends, and law enforcement officers from a number of agencies paid their final respects Wednesday to a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper who died on duty last week.
Trooper Michael Slagle, 53, was a 27 year veteran who was currently assigned to provide security to the Knoxville's Supreme Court building. He died Friday morning on his way to work. His patrol car slid off the road on an icy road, and he died of a medical condition before assistance arrived.
On Wednesday, a procession left Berry Funeral Home on Chapman Highway at noon, and proceeded to Woodlawn Cemetery for a 1:00 pm graveside service.
There were hundreds of law enforcement and emergency services vehicles in the procession, all honoring a man who had devoted his life to keeping people safe. At his graveside, people huddled under umbrellas in the pouring rain to say goodbye.
Slagle is survived by a wife and three children.
