Students competed at the 4th annual "Clinch Valley Science Fair" Sunday.

The competition featured a wide variety of projects focusing on life, earth and physical sciences. Students from the third to fifth grades competed for a chance to go to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., and win an iPad, among several other prizes.

Tony Jordan, with the Oak Ridge Sunset Rotary Club, said their goal is to spark kids' interest in science and math, while showing them how these topics can be fun and beneficial.

"If you're interested in science and math, you tend to do more reading outside the classroom," said Jordan. "More reading outside the classroom, more study outside the classroom -- actually leads to better study inside the classroom. It cannot help but help us on TCAP scores."

Organizers estimated nearly 180 students participated.
