Officials charge 14-year-old for shooting his father

Officers have charged a Madisonville teeager for shooting his father in the neck on Sunday afternoon.

According to a Madisonville Police Department release, the 14-year-old and his father got into a verbal altercation at their home on 1019 Lincoln Drive. The son picked up a handgun, and during a struggle, the gun fired and hit his father in the neck.

Officials said the teen then fled the scene, but officers were able to catch him a short time later.

Lifestar flew the father to UT Medical Center, and he was discharged on Monday.

The 14-year-old boy was held overnight at the Blount County Juvenile Detention Center.

A teenager is accused of shooting his father in the neck in Madisonville on Lincoln Drive at about 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

According to Madisonville Officer Kevin Standridge, the father is still alive.  Lifestar flew him to UT Medical Center, and Standridge said he was still conscious and coherent when crews arrived.

Authorities said it still remains unclear what initiated the shooting.  Police said the son used a pistol and more than likely fired one shot.  Officials said the 14 year old the ran from the scene, but they were able to catch him within 3-5 minutes of the shooting near the house.

Currently the teen is custody, but he's not facing charges at this moment.  Officers said they're still trying to determine what happened.  

Officers have turned the case over to detectives for further investigation.
