Rogersville police arrested two suspects accused of stabbing and killing a Hawkins County Marine veteran Saturday afternoon.
Officers responded to a robbery and stabbing at the Boyd Street Apartments in Rogersville shortly after 1:20 p.m. When they arrived on scene, they discovered the body of Roger Hawkins, 52, inside one of the units.
"It was really bad. It was a bad scene. It was a savage attack," said Rogersville chief Doug Nelson.
Authorities said Hawkins had been severely beaten and stabbed several times. According to a Rogersville Police Department release, authorities speculate that robbery was a motive in the crime. Police confirmed that several items were stolen from the victim's apartment. Officials later recovered those items at different locations.
A short time later, officers arrested two Rogersville men, Austin Scott Price, 18, and Samuel Wade Hirsch, 22, and charged them with first degree murder. Both are in the Hawkins County Jail on $1 million bonds.
"They frequented the apartment right above his in the same complex. I feel like I knew who he was," Chief Nelson added.
TBI agents and the Hawkins County District Attorney's Office are assisting in the investigation, which remains ongoing at this time.
Former Wife remembers "Best Friend"
"He was the type of person who would go the extra mile for anybody," Lisa Hawkins, the ex-wife of Roger Hawkins told 10News Monday afternoon.
She said the two were still cordial, and in fact called him a "best friend."
"Since all this has happened, people have dropped by and talked about how much they loved him," Hawkins added.
The Marine veteran served most recently in Operation Enduring Freedom. She wondered why someone who served our country had to die in this way.
"For the people who didn't miss him, it's a great loss."
