A Union County grand jury indicted a Maynardville man on Friday for assaulting an officer in February.

The grand jury indicted Mark Stephen Smith, 53, on one count of aggravated assault and one count of domestic assault.

Maynardville Police Sgt. Donnie Shipley responded to 169 Somerset Way to investigate a domestic dispute on Feb. 3. After arriving on scene, Shipley heard someone inside run to the back of the home and fire three gunshots. Shipley ran to behind the residence and found Smith on the back deck of the house. Next, Smith fired the gun twice.

The officer called for back up and told Smith to drop his weapon. Smith refused to follow the command and pointed the gun at Shipley.

Shipley then shot Smith in the shoulder. Crews transported Smith to Tenova Hospital in Knoxville for treatment. Officers arrested Smith on Friday, and he's currently being held in the Union County jail.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
