Tennesseans had 2,711 car accidents and three construction workers lost their lives in work zones last year, according to Governor Bill Haslam.
As we head into construction season, Governor Haslam declared this "Work Zone Safety Week", joining other states to remind drivers of the hazards for both workers and drivers.
TDOT says to remember that it's tight quarters for everyone in the work zone, not just drivers.
"If you see those orange barrels, those orange cones, there's a strong possibility that there's going to be a worker within a foot or two of you driving in that area," reminded TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi.
While it's dangerous for construction workers in work zones, it can actually be more dangerous for drivers. While three workers died last year, nine drivers and passengers also died in work zone accidents.
