(WBIR - Knoxville) The public on Saturday got a chance to check out some artifacts recently discovered as part of a TVA archaeological dig in Downtown Knoxville.

The open house was held at the site of a proposed parking garage on Locust Street.

Some of the artifacts date back to the late 1800s and may have belonged to a former Knoxville Mayor.

Jessica Stanton, Field Director for Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research said the bottles, bones and other artifacts can help us learn more about how the people lived hundreds of years ago.

She also said the artifacts will next be sent to a lab for further research and then will eventually be available for museums to loan in the future.
