AT&T and a local developer announced plans to offer high-speed internet directly to new apartments in downtown Knoxville.
Dewhirst Properties installed fiber cables throughout the West Jackson Row Apartments, and AT&T will offer U-verse services over a "fiber-to-the-premises" network.
Developers say the arrangement is perfect for the unique needs of downtown residents.
"A lot of people have all kinds of different needs and tastes. There are people who live here and work in their lofts. And they need high-speed broadband in order to do that effectively. A lot of that is the nature of downtown living. A lot of these folks live at home, work at home, very creative people, and they have a lot of high-speed uses for what they do," said David Dewhirst.
The arrangement is part of AT&T's Connected Communities program.
