(WBIR-Knoxville) Crews began demolition Tuesday on the site where two national retailers announced they'll build new stores in West Knoxville.
Workers are tearing down the old Papermill Plaza, near the intersection of Papermill Drive and Kingston Pike. That's the spot outdoor retailer REI said last week it will open a store in 2014. REI plans to hire 50 people once that store opens.
National grocer Whole Foods also plans to set up shop there. It first announced plans to come to East Tennessee back in 2011, but couldn't tell us last month when it plans to open.
Many of the businesses that were previously located in Papermill Plaza have relocated.
