(WBIR-Knoxville) A contract is in the works to build a new parking garage in downtown Knoxville.
City officials put out a request for proposals for the project about a month ago. On Tuesday, the city announced the contract will be given to Walnut Street Garage, LLC. The agreement will be finalized at the City Council meeting on September 17th.
The garage will be located at the corner of Summer Place and Locust Street, across from the Market Square Garage. It will include at least 1100 parking spots for employees of TVA and the Langley Building. Parking will be free for anyone on nights, weekends and holidays.
The company also plans to add retail space at the garage.
Crews will start tearing down a building currently at the site this fall. The property will be handed over to Walnut Street Garage LLC by January. The developers hope to have the garage open no later than December 2016.
