(WBIR, Knoxville) "I just can't believe this place! I've been to a lot of malls and this, it must be the best in the whole country!"
That's what one shopper said in July of 1984; the day Knoxville welcomed a new landmark, "East Town Mall."
The new shopping center's name reflected its location just off Interstate 640 on the east side of town. It was Knoxville's second shopping complex of its kind with West Town Mall being the first.
A huge crowd turned out for East Town's opening day and records showed more than 25,000 people passed through its doors on that day.
The mall has since undergone several changes including a name change. Regardless, the day East Tennesseans first walked through the doors of East Town Mall is a still a fun memory for many and remains one of your "Straight from the Heart" moments.
