  • Trader Joe's is a popular neighborhood grocery store.

Trader Joe's, a popular neighborhood grocery store in other parts of the country, will open its first location in Knoxville next year. The store will open in the Suburban Plaza Shopping Center on Kingston Pike

Trader Joe's says they're different from other grocery stores because they take a brand name product and make it their own brand. Officials say they remove preservatives and artificial ingredients and then sell the items at a cheaper price.

In order for Trader Joe's to fit into the 13 thousand square foot store in the Suburban Plaza Shopping Center, current businesses are moving around to make room.

Suburban Barber Shop has been in the same spot in the shopping center for the past 49 years and Hoyt Vanostale has worked there for 43 years. The shop is moving to the other side of the center. Vanostale said it's like losing a home. "We've told everybody that's where we're going to be, so they'll know where we're at," said Vanostale.

Employees at White Lace and Promises, a bridal shop in the shopping center, are doing the same thing. They're located just across the parking lot from the Trader Joe's spot, and their building is being torn down so that Trader Joe's can be seen from Kingston pike.

"We know Trader Joe's is hugely popular and people are excited to hear its coming in," said Bridal Consultant Amelia Pool. She said they will be moving the bridal shop into their new space in the same shopping center at the end of October.

"The location that we actually get to move to is larger. It's got more visibility from the road" said Pool. She said she's happy about Trader Joe's being in the same shopping center because it can only bring in more people to the bridal shop.

Trader Joe's began in the Los Angeles area over 50 years ago. There are now more than 350 locations nationwide including one in Nashville.

Previous Story

After months of speculation, we now have official confirmation that Trader Joe's, a unique, neighborhood grocery store with foods and beverages from the exotic to the basic, has signed a lease to open a new store in Knoxville located in Suburban Plaza.

The store, located at 8025 Kingston Pike, is scheduled to open in 2012 and is approximately 13,000 square feet in size.  The only Trader Joe's in Tennessee is located in Nashville.

According to a press release Tuesday, Trader Joe's was originally named in recognition of its distinct grocery buying process, because they search the world for great values and distinctive products. Crew members (store employees) consider themselves "traders on the culinary seas." Crewmembers sport brightly colored Hawaiian-themed shirts, adding to the light-hearted air of the store.
