Election years are a good opportunity to remind people of all ages about the importance of voting.

Tuesday night, the League of Women Voters of Knoxville-Knox County held a voter registration training event. However, it was teens, not adults who were learning the ins and outs of the civic duty.

The students are taught how to help their classmates register to vote. It is a part of a national initiative which encourages young people to participate in the democratic process.

Organizers said reaching potential voters early could have a big impact on the future. "We're hoping to engage the millennial generation - that's young people under the age of 30. They comprise almost 29% of the voting age population, but unfortunately only about half of them are registered to vote, and only about 1/2 of those that are registered even show up to vote," said Kelly Pemberton with the League of Women Voters.

After Tuesday's trainign session, the League of Women Voters will have student registration representatives in 13 area schools. They hope to have they in all Knox County Public and Private High Schools before the end of the semester.
