UPDATE: Denver police say a police officer has died after being shot in the head while trying to break up a confrontation at a city park, where hundreds of families had gathered for a free weekly jazz concert.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says officers were trying to break up a confrontation at City Park on Sunday night, around the time the band was wrapping up, when shots were fired. The shots sent scores of park goers running.

The officer was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

PREVIOUS STORY: Denver police say an officer has been shot at a park where hundreds of families had been gathered for a free weekly jazz concert.

Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez confirmed the shooting Sunday with The Associated Press. The condition and identity of the officer were not immediately available.

The gunfire erupted shortly after the band finished playing at City Park, sending crowds of people running.

The Sunday evening shooting apparently happened in proximity to a pond in the park, and after shots rang out, an announcer on a loudspeaker told attendees that the event, where people often linger once the band finishes, had ended and requested park goers leave.
