Channon Christian, Christopher Newsom
Runners remembered Channon Christian during a memorial race in Maryville by helping an East Tennessee girl pay for college on Sunday afternoon.
The "Channon Christian Memorial 5-K" honors Christian, who was killed in January 2007 along with Chris Newsom. Christian was a graduate of Farragut High School and was attending the University of Tennessee when she was brutally murdered.
After her death, the Channon Christian Memorial Foundation was established in her memory. Every year that foundation gives $5,000 to help send a young lady from Farragut High School to the University of Tennessee.
All proceeds from this race goes towards this scholarship fund.
A friend of the Christian family, Frank Damante, said it was a great way to show support for that family.
"I couldn't think of a better thing to do on a Sunday afternoon for a better Foundation," said Damante.
Channon Christian's parents, Gary and Denna, said they felt the support of the community today.
"This is just an amazing turnout. I've had a lot of people walk up to me today, shake my hand and say we're not going to forget," said Gary Christian.
"We don't want anyone to ever forget Channon or Chris," Denna Christian said.
This was the race's first year. A Golf Tournament also helps fund the Channon Christian Memorial Foundation and Scholarship.
