MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (AP) -- Hamblen County has seen 42 deaths so far this year that are either suspected or confirmed to have been caused by overdoses.
|Hamblen County Coroner Eddie Davis told the Citizen Tribune the 15 overdoses confirmed so far are all from prescription drugs. Toxicology reports often show a mixture of medications and in some cases they have been mixed with alcohol.
Davis said people seem to misjudge the danger of prescription medication. That's despite ongoing efforts to increase awareness.
Davis said the numbers this year continue a trend that's started about a decade ago.
County Medical Examiner Tom Thompson said that last year, overdoses were the No. 1 cause of death in Hamblen County for citizens under the age of 65.
