Knoxville Police say a man who was shot by an officer outside West Town Mall on Thursday was overheard by witnesses saying he had a weapon and was going to "shoot."

Investigators say Abraham Dudley, 30, of Knoxville, was shot once in the lower torso by Officer Christopher Edmunds.

Dudley was taken to UT Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.  UT could release no information about his current condition Friday morning.

It was not Dudley's first run in with the law.

According to documents from the Knox County Sheriff's Office Dudley plead guilty to reckless endangerment and vandalism in 2006.

The documents state Dudley began arguing with an ex-girlfriend outside a Porter Avenue home before throwing a cinder block at a car containing children.

The documents say he then drove away, firing shots in their direction.

Dudley was also arrested in 2004 on charges connected to cocaine trafficking in Cobb County, Georgia.

Officers have been conducting numerous interviews since the shooting, which happened around 5:30 pm in the parking lot outside the Dillard's store near Kingston Pike and Montvue Road.  Witnesses say Dudley's girlfriend was running away from him when he caught her and tried to force her into the car, with their two-year-old child inside.

"We know that according to callers to 911, that it was apparently a fairly violent encounter," says KPD Spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

The shooting happened shortly after officers arrived.  KPD says there was an "altercation" between the suspect and the officers before the shooting.

DeBusk says they know what the argument was about, and whether Dudley was actually carrying a weapon. But he says they won't release those details until completing interviews.

Officer Edmunds is on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation, which is standard procedure.  He has been with KPD since 2009.
