This is the land where the proposed Cadaver Research Site would be located in New Market.

The proposed site for Carson-Newman College's Tennessee Cadaver Research Foundation is causing concern in New Market.

"The air, the water and the environment," said nearby neighbor Doris Ligdon.

The research land, off Riddle Road, would allow the college to offer a Master of Science in Environmental Forensics.

Nearby homeowners have several worries including water runoff, smells and property values.

Carson-Newman said smells will be contained, water runoff will be monitored and the bodies will be fenced in.  Only one body would be received a month.

First responders could benefit from the research, the college said.

"We want to know if something hazardous has been there, how long will that be a problem," said Dr. B.J. Ellington with Carson-Newman.  "The program here will not contain any toxins and no infectious materials."

Carson-Newman said they've received clearance from TDEC, Homeland Security and the EPA.

Neighbors are forming a petition they plan to take to Jefferson County government officials.
