Another person has been sickened with a fungal infection in Tennessee, bringing the number of illnesses to 81, the Tennessee Department of Health said today.

Nationwide, the toll now stands at 438 with 32 deaths, according to another report released today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The most deaths from fungal meningitis - 13 - have been confirmed in Tennessee. But Michigan has the most fungal infections with 128, followed by Tennessee and then Indiana with 52.

The illnesses, which have been linked to contaminated steroid medicine produced by New England Compounding Center, have included meningitis, meningitis-related strokes and abscesses in the spinal area. The outbreak is the focus of ongoing federal safety investigations and a criminal probe.
