This weekend is a great time to take a trip to the Knoxville Zoo, especially since admission is free to the public for this weekend only.

Over the weekend, the zoo waived admission as part of the Kroger Free Weekend.
Visitors were encouraged to bring in a donated item for a number of local charities: Mission of Hope, Young-Williams Animal Center, Blount County Humane Society and Paws of Knoxville.

Knoxville Zoo Interim Director Lisa New said this was a way for the zoo to give back to the community.

"It's Knoxville Zoo's way to say thank you because we wouldn't be here without the support of our community," said New.

The Kroger Free Weekend at the Knoxville Zoo will continue until the zoo closes on Sunday.
