The City of Knoxville is providing more parking for bicycles.

Knoxville's first "bike corral," which converts an on-street parking space into parking for bicycles, is on Central Street in the Old City. Bike corrals are helpful in areas that have narrow sidewalks where racks can't fit or where there is a high demand for bike parking.

The city has also installed six bike racks in a parking spot in front of Old City Java. Knoxville has added racks to the sidewalk in front of businesses on the 400 block of Union Avenue as well. Officials hope to install more bike racks on Market Square's south end.

According to the City of Knoxville, more people are traveling downtown on bicycles to shop, eat, work and visit. Officials hope more bike racks will keep people's bicycles safe without damaging property or landscaping.

A grant from the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization funded this project. The City of Knoxville provided the installation work.
