A man was shot multiple times by a high-powered rifle in his La Vergne home while protecting his two young children from a spray of gunfire.
Police spokeswoman Kathy Tyson said Randy Malone was renting the home at 105 Hickory St. where he was shot several times below the waist after two suspects forced their way inside at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Tyson said victim Malone, who is in his 20s, was conscious and speaking afterward, and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Malone was in the home with his two children, the children's mother and another man and woman. No one else was injured, Tyson said.
Police said Malone had fought back to protect his children, and that his intercession might have kept them from harm.
The two suspects have not been identified, but police said they were following active leads Tuesday morning.
