The Seymour community has a new fire-fighting resource. A new station opened Wednesday morning in Kimberlin Heights in Knox County.

Johnson University donated the land and built the fire house for they Seymour Volunteer Fire Department. The new station allows for the department to house a larger fire truck and EMS unit.

Two Johnson University students will live at the house and run it.

Seymour FD says it's thankful for the generous donation.

"It represents a number of things. One is reduced response time, which allows the public to be better protected. It allows us to house firefighters here in the station, which gives us better response time, and it is open with a FEMA grant," said Chief Kevin Nunn.

A group of business owners started the volunteer fire department in 1971 because they wanted fire protection. The department now serves more than 20,000 homes.
