2012 has been a year to remember for former Vol R. A. Dickey of the New York Mets.
But years he tried to forget are the reason he's on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week.
The National League Cy Young Award winner shares the front of the sports magazine with Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison. The two went public this year with their stories of sexual abuse when they were younger.
Dickey wrote a book that included details of sexual abuse at the hands of a babysitter.
In the Sports Illustrated article, Dickey said the sexual abuse scandal that broke at Penn State convinced him he needed to speak out.
In an exerpt from the SI interview, Dickey said, "My heart broke for those boys in the Penn State scandal because I knew what they would be up against."
Dickey added, "And then...I felt for Jerry Sandusky because of what happened to him in his life. The toxicity of it all is so frightening. It energized me, made me see that there's a real nead for activism."
