Suspect descriptions, more pictures released from Newport bank robbery

Investigators have released descriptions of two suspects who robbed the Tennessee State Bank in Newport on Wednesday.

The first suspect is described as a white male in his mid-30s, approximately 5'10 to 6' tall with a slender build.

The second suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, approximately 5'8" tall with a medium build.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at (865)544-0751 or the Newport Police Department at (865)623-5556.

The search continues for two men who robbed a bank and held a police officer at gunpoint in the process.

Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults says the suspects were dressed from head to toe in black. They say the men walked in with at least one assault rifle and demanded money.

When the first officer arrived, he notice the robbers were still on the scene.

Chief Shults explains what that officer did next. "Upon seeing the robbers still inside the bank, he did the right thing and backed out, preventing a hostage situation. When he got outside, he was overtaken by the long weapons."

Shults says the robbers made the officer lie on the ground, and he surrendered his gun to them.

The suspects took off without hurting anyone, but they did get some money. They were last seen in a silver SUV similar to a GMC Acadia heading toward North Carolina on I-40.

The Newport police chief tells us one of his officers was confronted by a pair of armed robbers at the Tennessee State Bank on Cosby Highway Wednesday afternoon.

The chief says the officer was responding to a robbery call, and that run-in with the suspects happened outside the bank. The officer got down on the ground and surrendered his gun to the robber.

Two suspects fled with some money, but no one was hurt.

Police are looking for a silver SUV, possibly a GMC Acadia, last seen on Highway 321 headed toward North Carolina.
