The mild winter helped bring people to downtown Knoxville.

Holiday sales at retailers this year were the weakest nationwide since 2008. However, several downtown stores in Knoxville are experiencing the opposite.

Paul West, with Earth to Old City in Market Square, says holiday sales are up from last year.

"We really smashed last year's numbers so we were very happy with our holiday season," West said.

West said the skating rink brought traffic to downtown as well as the mild weather.

"We had three beautiful weekends in December and people were just out in force supporting the downtown community," West said.

Mast General Store's Heidi Berg says they will not total holiday sales until after the new year.

However, traffic in the store is still high.

"We're trending exactly where we want to be, trending right in line with where we were last Christmas. Seen a lot of great traffic through the store," Berg said.

Berg says things typically slow down at Mast General Store right after January 1.

Other stores who said their sales were up from last year include Fizz and Bliss Home.
