A Sweetwater teen died from a gunshot wound earlier this week, in what authorities are calling an accident.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the mother of 15-year old Matthew Daniels found him dead inside their home Thursday evening when she returned from work.

The gun belonged to the family and was kept in the home.

Sweetwater Police initially responded, and the District Attorney requested TBI work the death investigation. TBI says it appears to be accidental.

Daniels was a freshman at Sweetwater High School, where Principal David Watts says he was well liked among students and staff members.

"He was always smiling," Watts told 10News by phone Saturday evening.

Watts says Daniels was a dedicated student who was recently named "Student of the Month." He says the teen was considering playing baseball for the school.

Sweetwater High School is honoring Daniels' memory in several ways. On Sunday, there will be a memorial assembly at 2 p.m. in the high school gym. The school has also started the "Matthew Daniels Memorial Fund." Anyone who wishes to donate can contact the school directly.

Watts says Daniels favorite color was purple, and his students plan to wear ribbons in that color to school on Monday. He also plans to have grief counselors at the school next week.

A visitation is scheduled Monday from 4p.m - 7p.m. at First Baptist Church, Sweetwater.

A funeral is scheduled Tuesday at  6p.m. at First Baptist Church, Sweetwater
