BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) -- King College is changing its name to King University.

The college in Bristol, Tenn., opened in 1867, but has grown rapidly since 2005, doubling the number of students to 2,400.

College President Greg Jordan told a crowd at the student center last week the name change celebrates the institution's future. The Board of Trustees approved the change, to become effective June 1.

The Bristol Herald-Courier reported Jordan said being known as a university will make it easier to develop partnerships with other universities and will be a plus is recruiting foreign students.

Board Chairman William Adams said the change is consistent with a strategic plan launched 15 years ago by the school.
