The Firehouse Subs sandwich chain pays tribute to firefighters. Late Monday night, the sub shop on the Cumberland Ave. Strip was filled with them.
They didn't show up to eat though. Someone called 911 just before 11:00 p.m. to say smoke was coming from the building at the corner of 17th St. and Cumberland.
When they arrived on the scene, firefighters had to force their way inside and found the building filled with smoke, according to KFD spokeman Capt. DJ Corcoran.
The business was closed for the evening, and no one was hurt.
Firefighters quickly found the source of the blaze in air duct work in the ceiling, Corcoran said.
Firehouse shares the building with two other businesses: Noodles & Company and Moriconi's. Both were also filling with smoke when firefighters arrived, but the fire had not spread there.
KFD did not say how much damage the fire and smoke caused. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
