Food City has received prestigious award.

The Leadership Award from Dale Carnegie Training recognizes a company's commitment to providing excellent service and quality products; dedication to employee growth; recognition of employee value; and a sense of obligation which brings a high level of community involvement.  Only 10 are awarded each year.

"Our Leadership Award recognizes companies that are truly great," said Allyn Walker, President of Dale Carnegie of Tennessee. "Steve Smith and his team at Food City have created a sense of teamwork and a unified culture while growing to meet the changing demands of their industry and consumers."

Food City operates 104 stores, and has been a client of Dale Carnegie for 30 years, using Dale Carnegie training in its professional development process for store managers, district managers, and key leaders in Food City's Abingdon, VA, distribution center and headquarters.

"We are very excited to be the recipient of the 2013 Dale Carnegie Leadership award," said Smith. "Some would say we are in the grocery business, but we're really in the people business. Investing in our people through our partnership with Dale Carnegie has helped our leaders to grow both personally and professionally, which has a profound effect on their families, their associates, our company and the community as a whole."

"Food City's community service track record is outstanding, too," Walker said. "Each year, for example, the company serves as the title sponsor for the NASCAR Food City 500 and 250 races and conducts an annual campaign to raise money for local non-profit hunger relief organizations."

"Food City is heavily involved in the communities in which they operate, supporting local charities and causes," he said. "Food City is known for its service and community feel of its stores."

Past recipients have included Daimler-Chrysler Corporation and President Lee Iacocca; SAS Scandinavian airlines and CEO Jan Carlson; and, in Tennessee, The Lampo Group and Dave Ramsey.
