The Monroe County Commission's Justice Committee postponed its vote Tuesday night on whether or not to move forward with plans for a new detention facility to relieve overcrowding issues.

Monroe County officials have picked a location on Highway 68, just outside of downtown Madisonville.

The price of the property is still being negotiated.

The Monroe County Commission has already set aside money to buy land and prepare a site for a new detention center.

There's no timeline set for opening a new jail, but the county is required to show the state that it is making progress toward fixing overcrowding problems.

The next vote will come at the commission meeting in March
