A construction worker was hit and killed in a work zone Thursday afternoon.

State officials say Chad Rogers, 38, of Morristown, an employee of Charles Blalock and Sons, died after he was hit by a tractor trailer in the northbound lanes.  The investigating state trooper reported that Rogers' hard hat was blown off his head, and he was struck when he went onto the interstate to retrieve it.

The accident happened in a construction zone on I-81 near the Morristown exit. The accident was reported between noon and 1 pm on Thursday.

The worker was transported to a local hospital.

The THP incident report indicates that no charges or citations were filed.

Statement from TDOT Commissioner John Schroer:

"The tragic loss of Mr. Chad Rogers, an employee of Blalock and Sons, is a stark reminder of the dangers our highway construction workers face every single day while building and maintaining our transportation system. I speak for everyone here at the Tennessee Department of Transportation when I say our deepest sympathies are with Mr. Rogers' family, friends, and fellow construction workers."
