NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Sharply colder temperatures from a strong winter storm north of Tennessee could produce snowfall in the Volunteer State.

A winter storm warning is posted for the mountains of East Tennessee from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters expect 4-8 inches of snow in the uplands.

Up to three inches of snow is anticipated in Claiborne, Scott, Campbell and Morgan counties near the Kentucky border and a winter weather advisory goes into effect Tuesday night there.

A dusting to an inch is possible in the valley, including Knoxville.

From just west of Nashville across the Cumberland Plateau, less than a half-inch of snow is expected Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

Temperatures will tumble below freezing across most of the state and flurries to a dusting are possible in most other locations.
A quick warm-up is expected Thursday.
