Live music and lots of dancing filled Market Square as people dressed in green kicked off their St. Patrick's Day celebration on Saturday.

With hundreds of people packed in one of Knoxville's most popular areas, businesses in Market Square said they've noticed more customers than usual walk through their doors.

Xela Farkas, an employee at Fizz, said all the festivities brought a great boost to business.

"We've had a lot of people who I haven't seen in here before. Just people stopping in who are in Market Square and it's great for us," said Farkas.

People who ventured out to Market Square, like Madeline Langenfelder of Knoxville, said she was surprised by all the downtown activity.

"It's great!," said Langenfelder.  "It's nothing like I've ever experienced before."

Even visitors had a great time taking in St. Paddy's celebration.

Howiee Burns of Derby, Kansas said, "The best part is being about to hang out with the military folks I'm with."

Paula West, owner of Earth To Old City, said her gift shop sales went up just hours after the Market Square block party started.

West added, "Even if you don't have gangbuster sales the day of, it's well worth it to support your community in these types of events."
