After nearly 70 years since one veteran was injured in World War II, army officials finally awarded a purple heart medal to the widow of Pvt. Louis Allison on Monday.
Allison served for one year in Austria and Germany when he was injured in February 1945. His wife Cecil accepted his purple heart medal on his behalf. She said while she was sad he wasn't there, she couldn't be prouder of her late husband.
"He fought for his country, " she said. "He fought so we could be free. I'm very proud of him."
Cecil and her daughter asked for replacement medals in 2011. At that time, they discovered that the Army never issued Allison a purple heart medal.
