A Newport woman is charged with setting a fire that burned nearly 300 acres in the Grassy Fork community.

51-year-old Emily Debra Edwards is charged with setting a fire without a permit, reckless burning and leaving a fire unattended.

Court documents show Edwards started a fire on her property to get rid of old materials from a vacant home.

Wind gusts caused the flames to spread to neighboring property, but investigators say Edwards left the scene and didn't call fire officials.

The State Division of Forestry and the US Forest Service worked the fire, along with several local volunteer firefighters.
