Some Knox County first graders got their hands a little dirty on Friday.

Knoxville's Urban Forester Kasey Krouse helped the Lonsdale Elementary students plant a cherry tree outside the school.

They also got to learn about the benefits and importance of trees.

Krouse says he hopes this creates a lasting impact on the students and the community.

"Because it's young people that are going to be the ones responsible for doing this and taking care of the environment in the future and I think its important from a young age to get them involved in the outdoors," said Krouse.

For every $1 dollar Knoxville spends on trees,  the city gets about $3 dollars back in benefits.

That's everything from heating and cooling costs to higher property values.
