United States Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan is spending the day in Knox County.

His agenda includes meeting with students and teachers at West High School and a visit to Ritta Elementary School, to see why these schools are among the best in the state.

At West, he was joined by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, Superintendent Jim McIntyre, and Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett.  They leaders took part in a High School Redesign Roundtable to talk about the recent changes that have elevated student performance at West, including a focus on diversity, literacy programs, and a Focus Freshman Academy.

Secretary Duncan will host a "meet and greet" at Ritta Elementary School for invited guests at 3:00 pm.
