NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- This is Gold Star Wives Day in Tennessee.
Gov. Bill Haslam and state Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder announced April 5 as a day to honor spouses of military service members who died on duty or as the result of service-connected disabilities.
Grinder commended but the Gold Star wives' continued commitment to support veterans and other grieving survivors, saying their compassion has created an enduring legacy for fallen service members.
Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., is a Congressional chartered, nonprofit organization created by the war widows of World War II in the State of New York on December 18, 1945. Eleanor Roosevelt was a member of one of the 15 signers of the original Gold Star Wives of America, Inc. papers.
