Crews are working to repair a large sinkhole that's opened up in the middle of the Oak Ridge High School soccer field.

Officials say soccer coach Jon Day first noticed the hole a couple of weeks ago.

"We were setting up this activity, and I noticed there was a two foot diameter bowl -- like a bowling ball," Day recalled.

The field was closed off for safety reasons, and all the soccer games were moved to the football field.

"Coaching here in the Knoxville area over the last 12 years- I've never seen anything like this," said Day.

The hole continues to grow.  It's now about 12 feet deep and around 7 feet in diameter.

"Walls of the hole kept on collapsing in on itself. So at five feet, eight feet deep, we stopped excavating and called a geotechnical firm to do some surveys," said Allen Thacker, the supervisor of maintenance and operations at the Oak Ridge School District.

Crews are now trying to excavate the sinkhole so that it can be filled in and closed.
